DRAFT 5: COMPLETE!
Yes, ALL OF IT. Exciting, right? Final chapter and epilogue are DONE. Now what should I do next? I think Kim, editor supreme, wanted to look at it again. She’s two drafts behind at this point and she needs to see how I implemented her suggestions.
There wasn’t too much to change in this final part of the book. It’s about half wrap-up for book two and half set-up for book three. The set-up isn’t so difficult since I have one draft of book three done already.
So I’ll keep going through the book to polish things up, while Kim looks at it. There are also a few details and interactions that I forgot to add this time. I really should write them all down in one place; right now they’re just margin notes scattered around on my Google Docs manuscript. ๐
Supernatural Season 10 – I did finish this season, but monsters of the week and no seasonal bad guy make for low interest.
Paint it Black – I mean, look at this week’s monster: a GHOST painting. ๐ด
Fortunately Crowley is back, in his hilarious ‘Hell is my Mom‘ sitcom! And it seems he found his mom a gift this time: a captured witch from the supreme coven. The usual torture occurs, but Crowley’s mom learns some good info about the Winchesters and the Men of Letters.
Inside Man – In this one Dean slightly grunts and prompts Sam to call Castiel. “He’s getting worse, man. THE MARK. Any day he’s going to turn into a total monster and kill us all.”
So Sam and Castiel ditch Dean to pay Metatron a visit for an assumed cure for the Mark of Cain. Only problem is, the angels won’t let them into Heaven’s prison to see him! Can you believe that? What is a bro to do?
Ha! They spoil it in the cold open, but they know someone on the inside: Bobby, who is still dead and set up in Heaven listening to Kenny Rogers. Castiel and Sam use a spiritual medium to contact the ol’ fart, and they tell him how to open Heaven’s gate for them.
I thought there was a good line during the call with Bobby. While they’re going on and on about breaking into Heaven and Metatron and Marks of Cain, Bobby just sighs. “Remember when the job was just slicin’ some fangs and tossin’ back a cold one?”
Yep, Bobby, you picked the wrong episode to show up in if you wanted boring crap like that. ๐
As they break Metatron out, Dean is confronted by Crowley’s mom. She’s loaded with sigils and ready to blast him into oblivion for ‘corrupting’ her son. It doesn’t work because the Mark of Cain protects him. Then Crowley gives ol’ momma the boot out of Hell.
Book of the Damned – Gotta be kidding me. Charlie AGAIN!? Didn’t I just see her? Why. WHY does every other side character die from a sneeze but CHARLIE LIVES ON FOREVER!?
And of course she had found some super amazing book of curses that Sam needs to cure Dean’s mark.
Unfortunately there is some family of evil dudes that wants the book, too. It all ends with the bros. and Charlie holed up in a cabin as the family of curse-lovers comes for the book. This leaves only one option: Sam must destroy the book so that its evil will not spread. He does so, and they defeat the ‘Baddams Family.’
Sorry, I forgot what their names were. ๐ญ
I do love the episode’s twist, though. Just like the opening cutscene in Myst, Sam did NOT destroy the book as planned. When the time came, he swapped out the curse book with a copy of Puns for Bored Writers, swaddled it in cloth, and tossed it into the fireplace. ๐ฒ
Oh dang, I almost forgot about Metatron and Castiel in the subplot. Cass takes Meta’s grace, making him mortal. Then they go to find Cass’ grace so that he can get back to full power.
Metatron pranks Castiel with some bloody runes to give him cramps or something, and he escapes with the demon tablet that everyone wanted in earlier seasons. It was hidden in yet another book. ๐
In the closing scene, we see Sam with the curse book, and he’s going to Crowley’s mom for help!?
The Werther Project – Crowley’s mom WILL help Sam, in exchange for killing her son. But she needs something first. Can you guess what it is? It’s another book. She needs it to TRANSLATE the first book. And it’s locked in a safe inside an old Men of Letters house.
BUT! The safe had been cursed by our ol’ buddy Magnus. Remember? The guy that kept the First Blade inside an invisible museum. Yes, the actor appears again for a sole flashback, which was cool.
But the safe’s curse sucks indeed: it makes you want to kill yourself after you get a massive guilt trip from hallucinations. Sam and Dean are both affected, but Crowley’s mom shows up to cast ‘dispel’ on Sam.
While Dean is off dreaming about Benny and Purgatory, (Again, the actor returns.) Sam and Crowley’s mom find the safe. But it needs an offering: Men of Letters blood! Sam cuts his own wrists to feed the ‘now opening’ meter like some kind of video game.
Dean breaks free of his illusion; seems THE MARK won’t let him die, even by his own hand. He goes to find Sam bleeding to death next to the safe.
Now, I was blown away by this next part: Crowley’s mom was ALSO a hallucination. She did not show up ‘just in time’ to save Sam; she was the one egging Sam on to spill all his blood for the safe until he died.
Although… the safe really DID need blood to open. How fortunate I guess. So Dean donates some and the safe is unlocked at last! Book received. ๐
Angel Heart – Uh oh, Castiel feels bad about his host body’s original family again. That means more annoying teen drama from the ‘daughter’ until the bros find the missing mother.
Turns out she DIDN’T abandon the daughter; she had been captured by a vampire angel. ๐
Dark Dynasty – What is going on with these titles? All of them recently have been normal descriptions of what happens. Maybe I’m just not getting the references.
What NOT normal is Sam and how he’s going out in secret to meet Crowley’s mom, Castiel, and frickin’ CHARLIE to translate the multiple books to cure THE MARK.
And Dean suspects. He knows something’s up with Sam, being gone all the time. I would be rolling my eyes so hard if Dean DIDN’T notice. Because Sam’s excuses are pathetic. He’s like “What? Why can’t I go off on my own? We do things on our own sometimes.”
And Dean’s like “No. We really don’t.”
Then Frankenstien spills the beans. Yes, a descendant of Dr. Frankenstien. THAT’S who the ‘Baddams Family’ from the earlier episode is. But then that Mary Shelley chick found their castle and wrote a book about their evil deeds. Then they had to change their name to Stien and move to Louisiana. ๐คฃ
So these guys are still after the Book of the Damned, and they modify their bodies with mad science. Extra hearts, more muscle mass, that sort of thing. Who will show up next, Dracula? Buffy already did it.
But the Frankenstien guy, after he’s chained up, reveals to Dean that the Book of the Damned can’t be destroyed, and that they’re still tracking it. And while Dean leaves ol’ Frank alone to go yell at Sam, the prisoner escapes by ripping off his own arm.
And then Stein goes to… KILL CHARLIE!? She only had notes from the book on her laptop! They can track digital books!? At least she uploaded whatever she found to someplace before they stabbed her to death and dumped her body into a bathtub for Sam and Dean to find.
Look, I wrote the review for ‘Book of the Damned’ before I saw this episode. I didn’t really think Charlie would die. ๐ญ
The Prisoner – The bros cremate Charlie’s corpse, and they’re more upset than anyone has ever been about death on this show. Dean even interrupts Sam’s ‘I’m so, so, sorry’ eulogy.
“You got her killed; you don’t get to say anything!”
So Sam promises never to use the Book of the Damned again, and Dean promises to kill every single member of the Frankenstien family in one giant slaughterfest.
And guess what? Only ONE of those promises is kept! ๐
Yes, Sam immediately breaks his promise because Charlie’s last-second email cracked the code and got sent to him. Only problem is, Crowley’s mom won’t perform the spell to erase THE MARK. Not until Crowley is dead.
So Sam tricks Crowley with a fake Dean voice over the phone into meeting at an empty warehouse. Then he shoots him with a sigil-marked bullet and slaps him with a special hex bag that starts to kill him.
Then Sam gives Crowley a speech as the King of Hell barfs up a river of blood on the floor.
“Everyone else may have forgotten all the evil things you’ve done but I haven’t! All the people you’ve hurt! All my friends!”
Then Crowley SMILES. His eyes glow red. Epic, ominous music begins to play. I’m almost about to pee my pants. I’m thinking is Crowley going to do something amazing? After all this time being lazy!? ๐ฎ
Yes. Cowley resists the hex bag’s magic, vaporizes it in a cloud of brimstone, and blasts Sam through a wall. He’s also able to REMOVE the marked bullet.
“Thank you for reminding me of how evil and awesome I’m supposed to be, Moose.”
He allows Sam to live because it’s funny.
On the Dean side of things, he does indeed kill every Frankenstein family member. And he beats up Castiel for some reason. Uh, how is he able to hurt an angel with just his fists? ๐
Brother’s Keeper –
Crowley’s mom is sad that Sam failed to kill her son, but she still agrees to perform the spell. “Just let me leave with the book.” she says. Yeah right.
Castiel calls up Crowley to get the ingredients they need. He agrees, for some reason, to find everything: the fruit from the Tree of Life; the golden calf that the Isrealites fashioned while Moses was getting the Ten Commandments; and the only thing that Crowley’s mom loves. (It’s some guy we’ve never seen before, but Crowley learned about episodes ago.)
Dean is off on his own while this is going on, doing mean things to people and getting some other hunter killed. He realizes how far-gone he is, and summons DEATH for a talk.
Wow, it’s been a while since Death showed up. And Dean wants Death to kill him.
But Death says he’s not going to do that. Because he knows that THE MARK is the key to releasing the Darkness. Yes, the ‘darkness’ that is mentioned in Genesis when God created the universe.
And Death has a better idea: he will take Dean away into space where no one can be hurt by him ever again. And Sam must be killed, so that he doesn’t do something dumb, like using a spell to get rid of the Mark. Uh oh.
Dean calls up Sam and tells him to come find him. He explains how he is going to sacrifice Sam for the good of the world. Death hands over his scythe, and Dean readies the weapon to reap Sam.
Then he spins and slams the scythe through Death’s torso! ๐ฎ
Death melts into dust, and Crowley’s mom finishes the spell. THE MARK is removed from Dean, and, as promised, the Darkness escapes with more special effects than this entire season has ever seen.
Dan and Sam try to drive away from the encroaching cloud of all-encompassing gloom. Unfortunately, a muddy pot hole stops them. They are overcome by Darkness. End credits.
Okay, I have some questions. Where was Metatron? He took the demon tablet and ran. And why didn’t they play that song? Every season they play some Wayward Son song during the season finale recap. Did it cost too much for the rights? Did they need the money for the awesome lightning bolts and dark energy cloud?
And what was the point of Cole? And the coven of witches that were introduced? They didn’t end up doing much of anything.
Again, I would be VERY annoyed if I had to wait for the next season.
See you need time!
